Homeschoolers Get Modern

Homeschool Workshop (Recommended for students ages 6–18)

Explore what modern art means using paintings and sculpture from the Carter’s collection and works on paper featured in the exhibition American Moderns on Paper: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. During this dialogue-based program students will look at artworks that led up to the modern art movement in the U.S. and learn how American art changed during the early to mid-twentieth century. Students will also participate in hands-on activities that reinforce key modern art concepts.

Homeschool educators are encouraged to register for the parents’ portion of the workshop, which takes place at the museum while students are participating in their program. During the parents’ portion, participants will work with Carter educators to discover innovative ways to incorporate modern art into their home curriculum.

Space is limited, and preregistration and prepayment are required for registration to be complete: $7 for children of members, $10 for children of nonmembers. Homeschool educators can purchase instructional materials related to the workshop, including digital images, for $10.

Students must be six years old or older to attend the program, and they will be divided into groups by age. Adults will be separated from children but are welcome to bring infants or toddlers with them to the parents’ training.

Homeschool Book Club for Early Elementary Students

(Recommended for students ages 6–9)

An Eye for Color: The Story of Josef Albers by Natasha Wing

This year the Carter is getting modern and our Homeschool Book Club is no exception. Josef Albers’ 1960 painting Study to Homage to the Square: Remote is the inspiration for this spring’s Book Club selection. Students will take an in-depth look at Albers’ scientific approach to color and his exploration of the square by utilizing his artwork and participating in an Albers’-inspired, color-study exercise. As they tour the Carter’s collection and the exhibition American Moderns on Paper: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, students will also look at artworks by other artists who were experimenting with color.

Space is limited, and preregistration and prepayment are required for registration to be complete: $20 for children of members and $25 for children of nonmembers. The program fee includes a copy of the book, which can be mailed to program participants or picked up at the museum prior to the program. Call or e-mail for multiple family member discounts. Students will be divided into groups by age. Parents are encouraged to drop their students off at the museum for this program as there is no parental instruction.
