A. Everett “Chick” Austin Jr. became the director of the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1927 at the age of twenty-six. He not only transformed the way America looks at art but was one of the first to incorporate theater and dance into museum programming—all before the age of thirty. In conjunction with the exhibition American Moderns on Paper: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, read Nicholas Weber’s Patron Saints: Five Rebels Who Opened America to a New Art, 1928–1943. At the museum, readers and museum educators will gather in the exhibition to discuss the readings and gain insight into individuals who were pacesetters in changing America’s perception of the arts. Refreshments will be provided after the discussion. The first thirty registrants will receive a free copy of Patron Saints.
