CPE credits, digital images, and lesson plans tied to state and national standards are provided at each workshop. Space is limited, and preregistration and prepayment are required. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries a variety of factors have caused a steady stream of people to immigrate to the United States and migrate across the country. Discover the reasons why and how artists have integrated American immigration and migration into their artworks. Topics include artists who immigrated to the United States, westward expansion, and industrialization. This broadcast utilizes the Carter’s permanent collection of paintings, photographs, and works on paper, as well as nineteenth-century immigrant guides. This program is most appropriate for art and social studies educators of all grade levels, although others may benefit.

Then, contact the Carter at 817.989.5038 or distancelearning [at] cartermuseum [dot] org to receive an individual registration and materials payment form to submit prior to the broadcast.

From Charles Russell to Richard Avedon, discover how American artists have depicted the American West throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Using the unique perspectives of artists in the Carter’s collection, explore which aspects of the West have changed over time and which have endured. This workshop is most appropriate for educators of all grade levels teaching language arts, social studies, U.S. history, and visual art. Refreshments provided from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

Focus on . . . African-American History

Educator Intensive

Looking for fresh ways to integrate African-American art, culture, and history into your curriculum? Bring an existing lesson featuring African-American history to this intensive workshop and learn how to recharge it with images from the Carter’s collection and resources from the Teaching Resource Center. Share ideas and receive guidance from Carter educators. Language arts, social studies, and visual art teachers from the same school are encouraged to attend this program together. This intensive is appropriate for educators from all grade levels and disciplines but is limited to ten participants—so register early!

Now That’s Modern

What is modern art? During this discussion-based workshop, explore the meaning of this term utilizing works from the Carter’s permanent collection and the special exhibition American Moderns on Paper: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art. Connect major modern art movements with language arts, science, social studies, and visual art. Educators of all grade levels are welcome. Refreshments provided from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

The Joke’s on You

Learn how American artists have infused their artworks with humor, visual puns, and ways to trick viewers’ eyes. We are not fooling! During this dialogue-based workshop, learn about trompe l’oeil painting and discover some of the Carter’s funnier artists and artworks. Educators from all disciplines and grade levels are invited to attend this fun-filled program. Refreshments provided from 4:30 to 5 p.m.
