The practice of photographer and video artist Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie emphasizes the concept of visual sovereignty, which describes Indigenous peoples’ right to self-representation. A foundational figure of contemporary Native American photography, her creative strategies include humor and conceptualism, as well as the appropriation of historical photographs and visual culture. Tsinhnahjinnie, who was born in the Bear clan of the Taskigi Nation and the Tsinhnahjinnie clan of the Diné (Navajo) Nation, holds a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts and an MFA from the University of California, Davis. As of 2024, she serves as Director of the Gorman Museum of Native American Art and as Professor in the department of Indigenous Studies at the University of California, Davis.
