Object Description
After his neighbors protested in Fort Worth as part of the Occupy Wall Street movement, Huckaby embarked on a project documenting those who lived or spent time in Highland Hills, a predominantly Black neighborhood in the south part of the city. He made drawings of friends, family, and strangers he encountered, creating quick, spontaneous sketches that he overlaid with remarks from his sitters. Later, he translated these portraits into a series of 101 lithographs at the Brandywine Workshop in Philadelphia, titling the project The 99%—Highland Hills.
Huckaby’s prints zero in on each sitter’s individuality, drawing them out through causal poses, vigorous linework, and poignant use of quotations. The works suggest each person’s unique presence, creating space for a viewer to glimpse a part of their everyday life and, in turn, share in a sense of collective humanity.
