u.l. printed: When the sun has gone down there comes upon \ the desert a soft, suffusing light, the afterglow, \ which is its chiefest charm. The light fades slow - \ ly and with twilight comes the ever present purple \ haze, as indescribable as it is indefinite, that half- \ veils the horizon and tinges the middle distances. \ One forgets the dreary stretches of sand and alkali, \ the gleaming sun, the scorching wind, the thirsty \ vegetation that all belong to the desert, in the fas- \ cination of the first shadows of evening.
