    u.c. to l.c. in ink: "Dandy", with Emanuel H. Custer, father of Gen \ Geo. A. Custer. "Dandy" was one of two thoro- \ bred horses used by Gen. Custer in his last \ ill-fated campaign. On the morning of the battle \ of the Little Big Horn, June 15, 1876, Gen. Custer \ rode "Vie" into battle, ordering Jolen Backware \ (his striker) to take "Dandy" back to the pack \ train. During the [illeg.] fight on the hill, "Dandy" \ was wounded, but only slightly. He was sent \ backt o Custer's and home at Monroe, Mich. \ where Custer's father rode him for many \ years altho' between 75 and 80 years of age. \ Emmanuel H. custer was born in \ Ceryssoptown, Alleghany Co., Maryland, Dec. 10, 1806. \ He married Matilda Viers, Aug. 7, 1828, who died July \ 18, 1834. For his second wife he married Mrs. Israel R. \ Kirkpatrick, who became the mother of Gen. Geo. A. Custer. \ Geo. A. Custer was born in New Rawley, O., Dec. 5, 1839.
