BENJAMIN L.E.BONNEVILLE. \ UNITED STATES ARMY. \ Born in France in the year 1795. \ At the time of his death he was 83 yars of age: the oldest officer on the \ retired llist. \ From the War Department instructions to Captain Bonneville, dated at \ Washington August 3, 1831, I quote: \ "The leave of absence which you have asked has been sanctioned. You \ are therefore authorized to be absent from the army until October, 1 1833. It \ is understood that the government is to be at no expense in reference to \ your proposed expedition; and at the expiration of your leave of absence \ you will rejoin your proper sataion. Alexander Macomb, \ "Major-General Commanding the Army. Captain Bonneville left Fort Osage on the Missouri with 110 men, on \ May 1, 1832. Washington Irving says: "The term of his leave of absence \ expired, yet no report was made of him at headquarters in Washington. He \ was considered cirtually dead or lost and his name was stricken from the \ army roll.***It is was in the autumn of 1835 that I first met with Captain \ Bonneville. He was on his way to report himself at headquarters, in the \ hope of being reinstated in the service." \ The photograph of which this is a copy was taken in the 1873, \ when Bonneville was 78 years of age. \ NATHANIEL PITT LANGFORD, \ ST.
