l.c. [printed]: GEN. U.S. GRANT, \ The Soldier, Patriot and Statesman. Born at Point Pleasant, Clement County, Ohio. Died at Mt. McGregor, New York, July 23, 1885. \ The last honors paid by a grateful Nation to this illustrious man, form the subject of this series of illustrations that follow. His wonderful career during the last twenty five years of his life \ has no parallel in history. He was called by the Governor of Illinois from the position of clerk in his brother's employ, to an appraisorship of material for troops; took command of the 31st Illinois \ Regiment; rose from the Colonelcy to Brigadier, Major-General, Lieutenant-General and General of the Army, and was inducted, as it were, by acclaimation to the Presidency. These views will show \ the magnificent procession, composed of the celebrities of the Nation who participated in the ceremonies from Mount McGregor to the Tomb at Riverside. \ 1
