Hassidim jews are the pious ones, they live in scrupulous accordance with the Code \ of Jewish Law, the way their acenstors did in Central Europe. The Lubavitcher \ Hassidim jews of Brooklyn are considered the Jesuits of the American Hassidic \ universe, their stronghold is in Crown Heits (sic) of Brooklyn. There exists a kind \ of open war between the Lubavitcher jews of Russian Polish descent who are pro \ Israel, and the Stmar Jews who originated from Hungary and who are mostly anti \ Israel. \ It is amazing that within a modernised American Society that they have managed \ to retain traditions in an eloping 20th century, although in America the nation \ which has given shelter to the puratin Quakers, the Amish, the Menonites (sic) and \ the Mormons many of these groups are trying to retain their identity. \ Photos by [illeg.] [scratched out in graphite] and Leonard FREED/MAGNUM
