Object Description

“The history of America is a history of gigantic engineering feats and colossal mechanical constructions,” Lozowick declared in a 1927 essay. An immigrant from present-day Ukraine, he saw immense social potential in industrial and urban life. He was also a committed Marxist, and he hoped that the industrial achievements of capitalism might lay the foundations for a more equal socialist society.

New York, Lozowick’s dramatic rendering of the Brooklyn Bridge, dates to the beginning of his affiliations with left-wing organizations in New York, including the magazine New Masses, for which he served as an illustrator and essayist. The print sets the sweeping cables of the famed suspension bridge against a dramatic skyline of buildings and elevated railcars. Strong contrasts of light and dark convey the luminous brilliance of electric lighting, while the sweeping curves suggest the dynamism of a city in ceaseless motion.
