    u.l. printed: Before the coming of the railroad the journey to \ Santa Fe was made by stage coach over the his- \ toric Santa Fe Trail. The fare for the perilous \ journey was $150 and the time schedule, from \ Independence, Missouri, eastern terminus of the \ trail, was 20 to 25 days. A charge of fifty cents \ a pound was made for baggage in excess of 40 \ pounds. Passengers carried their own bedding \ and slept in the crude relay stations provided at \ intervals along the route.
