u.c. to u.r. printed on paper label: Wa-pa-ha Sha (Red Ensign) \ Popularly called "Wabashaw" is the \ hereditary name of the principal chief of \ the Santee, or Mde wakan tonwan Dakota. \ Befoe 1870, as stated by Mr. Hinman, \ Wa-pa- Sha abdicated his rights as \ Hereditary Head Chief, advocating and \ successfully establishing an Elective \ Chieftainship. From that period down \ to the present time all Santee Chiefs \ have been elected by the popular voice \ of the tribe. He was a man of great in- \ fluence in the tribe, and an active worker \ for the civilized methods of the white man.
