u.l. to u.r. printed on paper label: Pa-da-ni A-pa-pi (Struck by the Ree) \ Pawnee, or Arikara \ (Ree) \ They struck him, or He was struck \ This name is the reverse of its popular \ translation, meaning really He struck a Ree, \ or counted "coup" on him. It is considered \ an appellation of bravery. \ Pa-da-ni A-pa-pi was head Chief of the \ Yankton (one of the largest divisions of the \ Dakota). At the time of the Sioux outbreak in \ Minnesota, (1862) the Yankton numbered about \ 3000 souls, and had they joined the Minnesota \ Indians, all the White Settlements in Dakota, \ must have been wiped out, but Pa-da-ni A-pa-pi \ warned the White settlers to take refuge in the \ forts, promising to keep his people from the \ war-path if possible. He kept his word.
