Event Details

Event Date

  • Wednesday, March 27, 5:30–7 p.m.

Event Description

Paper Forum members are invited to join Dr. Emily C. Burns to take an in-depth look at Russell’s watercolor Sun Worship in Montana in connection with Blackfeet art and culture. She will offer insightful biographical details on Blackfeet model Josephine Wright and the transnational and transcultural dialogue between Russell and Blackfeet people. Burns will explore how Blackfeet knowledge and culture embedded in the clothing and materials depicted in Russell’s watercolor resonated with and informed his stylistic experiments, which drew on the color and texture of beaded designs.

Emily C. Burns is the Director of the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West and an Associate Professor of Art History in the School of Visual Arts at the University of Oklahoma, where she teaches courses on American art and the art of the American West. Burns was a 2016–17 Davidson Family Fellow at the Carter.

Free for Paper Forum members! RSVP by email or call 817.989.5060 by March 17. Not a member of the Paper Forum? Join today!
