THE CARTER DOWNTOWN

A painting of a White man pulling back a red curtain to reveal an outdoor scene of a small George Washington holding a hatchet near a damaged cherry tree and a taller man next to him gesturing angrily toward the damaged tree.
September 18, 1999–September 1, 2001

Situated within the Carter’s temporary gallery in downtown Fort Worth, this series of installations gives visitors the opportunity to experience American art through “Greatest Hits” of the museum’s collection including landscapes, portraits, and views of the western frontier. Visitors will still be able to experience such masterpieces as Grant Wood’s Parson Weems’ Fable, Winslow Homer’s Crossing the Pasture, Frederic Remington’s The Fall of the Cowboy, Charles M. Russell’s The Buffalo Hunt [No. 39], and Georgia O’Keeffe’s Dark Mesa with Pink Sky, among others, while the museum is closed for expansion.
