March 29, 2005 Amon Carter Museum Gallery Teachers to Instruct TCU Extended Education Class
Fort Worth, TX, March 29, 2005—The Amon Carter Museum is teaming up with Texas Christian University’s Extended Education Program for two summer workshops that will introduce adults to new ideas and activities that can help children enjoy and connect with works of art at any museum. Bring Your Children to the Art Museum and Bring Your Grandchildren to the Art Museum will be led by Amon Carter Museum Gallery Teachers Kendra Keefer-McGee, Erin Long, and Bridget Thomas.
“Armed with a few key strategies, adults can actually let children teach them about art,” said Nora Christie, tour programs manager. “Together, the whole family can then experience, explore and discover the wonders that art museums have to offer.”
Predicated on the notion that adults themselves are often intimidated by art museums or feel unqualified to guide another person—even a child—through an art museum, this class will offer adults a fun and practical approach to visiting a museum with children. Once participants have registered for the class, an Amon Carter Museum gallery teacher will contact them personally to discuss what they hope to achieve through this course. The gallery teachers will then design a program that meets individual needs and interests of the participating parents or grandparents.
Only adults will attend the first session, when gallery teachers will present techniques to use with children in art museums, explain museum etiquette for families, provide information on family activities and discuss resources available at the Amon Carter Museum as well as other art museums in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Children and adults will attend the second session and tour the Carter together with the gallery teachers, who will facilitate interaction among them. Families will then be invited to stay for a short reception to speak with gallery teachers and other members of the Carter’s staff.
