Scott and Stuart Gentling

Born in Rochester, Minnesota, on New Year’s Eve, 1942, Scott and Stuart Gentling moved with their family to Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 5. They began collaborating on creative endeavors soon after and became professional artists in their twenties. In parallel careers that spanned more than 40 years, the brothers lived and worked together in Fort Worth, where they built a regional and national reputation for their watercolor paintings. Their artistic interests were far-ranging and included natural history, Aztec Mesoamerica, 18th-century fashion, landscape, and portraiture. The Carter houses more than 80 watercolors by the Gentlings, including the original bird paintings from their best-known project, Of Birds and Texas. The Carter is also home to the Scott and Stuart Gentling Papers, which offers an archive of letters, photographs, and essays by the brothers, along with more than 500 of their drawings and preparatory studies.
