Tamarind Lithography Workshop Collection

Founded by artist June Wayne in Los Angeles in 1960, the Tamarind Lithography Workshop was an effort to revitalize the printmaking medium of lithography as a fine art in the United States. Through artist residencies and fellowships, Tamarind trained a pool of master artisan-printers in the United States and offered visiting artists of diverse styles an opportunity to learn and work with the medium. (The program, now known as the Tamarind Institute, continues today at the University of New Mexico.)

The Carter’s Tamarind Lithography Workshop Collection boasts a copy of almost every print made at the workshop from 1963 through 1970, totaling more than 2,300 lithographs. Artists represented in the collection include Anni Albers, Ruth Asawa, Sam Francis, Louise NevelsonEd Ruscha, Rufino Tamayo, and Charles White.
